Great Lakes Airway and Sleep — Wake up rested. Canton, MI.
Canton, Michigan

Eight hours in bed is not eight hours of sleep.

If your airway closes while you sleep, your body wakes to reopen it — hundreds of times, without you remembering any of it. We treat that with a custom oral appliance instead of a machine.

1 in 5American adults have some degree of obstructive sleep apnea. Most have never been tested.

The tiredness is the symptom. The airway is the problem.

During sleep the muscles around the throat relax. In some people the airway narrows enough to close. Oxygen drops, the brain interrupts sleep to restore breathing, and the cycle restarts — sometimes every couple of minutes, all night.

A mandibular advancement appliance holds the lower jaw a few millimetres forward, which keeps that airway open. It is worn only at night, it is made from a scan of your own teeth, and it fits in a pocket.

What we treat

Person asleep in soft morning light
Diagnosed apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea

Appliance therapy for mild to moderate OSA, and for severe OSA where CPAP has failed. Coordinated with your sleep physician throughout.

Bedroom at first light
No diagnosis yet

Heavy snoring

Loud, nightly snoring is worth taking seriously even without apnea. We assess the airway and arrange testing if the picture warrants it.

Clinician reviewing a chart
Already tried CPAP

CPAP intolerance

The best therapy is the one worn every night. If the machine has been in the closet for a year, an appliance is very likely a better fit.

Four visits, then once a year

Nothing about this is rushed, and nothing is ordered before you know what it costs.

01

Evaluation

Airway, bite and dental health reviewed. We look at your sleep study or help you arrange one.

02

Digital scan

A ten-minute intraoral scan. No trays, no impression material. Your appliance is built from it.

03

Delivery

The appliance is seated and you are taught to advance it yourself in small, comfortable increments.

04

Confirmation

A follow-up sleep test verifies the appliance is actually treating you, not just quieting you.

Owner and managing member of Great Lakes Airway and Sleep. Her practice is limited to airway and sleep — appliance therapy, follow-up titration, and long-term monitoring of the bite. She works alongside referring sleep physicians rather than around them.

If an appliance is not the right answer for you, she will say so at the first visit and tell you what is.

“Twenty years of my snoring. Two weeks of the appliance. My wife sent the review, not me.”

Questions before you call

If yours is not here, the chat at the corner of this page answers most of the rest.

For apnea, yes — an appliance is prescribed against a diagnosis. A home sleep test interpreted by a physician is usually enough. If you have only ever been told you snore, come in first and we will tell you whether testing is worth arranging.

Oral appliance therapy for diagnosed OSA is a medical benefit rather than a dental one, and most plans cover a substantial share. We verify your specific benefits and give you the out-of-pocket figure in writing before the appliance is ordered.

The first few nights feel like wearing a retainer, and mild jaw soreness in the morning is common and short-lived. The appliance advances in very small steps so you are never pushed further than you can tolerate.

Some patients see small long-term changes in how their teeth meet. We record your bite at the start, check it at every visit and use a morning repositioner to limit it. If changes become meaningful, we adjust the plan.

That is one of the main reasons people switch. It needs a case, not an outlet, a hose or distilled water.

Yes, and we send a written report back after delivery and after the confirming sleep test. Fax and referral details are available by phone.
